Why the sticker is never the price

The out-the-door price is the only number that matters: vehicle price plus sales tax, dealer documentation fee, and title and registration. Dealers quote payments; lenders quote rates; the out-the-door total is what you actually agree to. Two things move it most: whether your state gives a trade-in tax credit (taxing only the difference between the new car and your trade), and the doc fee, which some states cap by law and others leave to the market.
