How New York taxes a car deal

New York applies a base vehicle sales tax rate of 4%, and local add-ons commonly raise the combined rate by around 4.5 percentage points depending on city and county. Good news on the trade: New York taxes only the difference between the vehicle price and your trade-in value, so a strong trade allowance cuts your tax bill directly. Dealer doc fees are capped by law at $175.

Rates and rules shown are estimates pending verification against official New York sources — always confirm with the DMV and your final paperwork.
