How Louisiana taxes a car deal

Louisiana applies a base vehicle sales tax rate of 4.45%, and local add-ons commonly raise the combined rate by around 4.5 percentage points depending on city and county. Good news on the trade: Louisiana taxes only the difference between the vehicle price and your trade-in value, so a strong trade allowance cuts your tax bill directly. Dealer doc fees are not capped, so treat the doc fee as part of the negotiation.

Rates and rules shown are estimates pending verification against official Louisiana sources — always confirm with the DMV and your final paperwork.
