How Mississippi taxes a car deal
- State tax rate
- 5%
- Local add-ons
- ≈ +0.1 pts by city/county
- Trade-in credit
- Yes — taxed on the difference
- Doc fee
- Uncapped
Mississippi taxes passenger vehicles at 5% — notably below its 7% general sales tax, one of the few states where cars get a friendlier rate than groceries — with essentially no local add-on on vehicles. Trucks over ten thousand pounds pay 3%; the trade-in credit applies in full on dealer purchases either way.
That 5%-flat structure makes Mississippi one of the simpler states to price a deal in: price minus trade, times 1.05, plus fees. Doc fees are uncapped and typically run $350–500, so the fee section deserves more attention than the tax section here.
One budgeting note that outweighs the purchase math for long-term cost: Mississippi's annual ad valorem tax on vehicles — collected with your county registration and based on the vehicle's assessed value — runs real money on newer cars and continues yearly, declining as the car ages. Plenty of Mississippi buyers are surprised less by the dealer's paperwork than by the first tag renewal; put it in the ownership budget from day one.
Every figure above was last verified against official Mississippi sources in July 2026. Tax rules do change — the final word is always your paperwork and the DMV.
